Brunswick GA I The Islander After being canceled for the first time in its 13 year history last year due to Hurricane Irma, the Jekyll Island Authority’s popular annual Shrimp and Grits Festival is back on for this September 14th, 15th and 16th. The event will be sponsored this year by Southern Living Magazine. The storm and resulting cancellation caused losses for businesses throughout the county. Jekyll Island Authority revenues were down 32 percent, or approximately $1.5 million, from the cancellation in September.
While the Authority’s Merry Shrimpmas event, hosted on Nov. 24-25 last year, mitigated some of the losses, JIA spokeswoman Jessica Scott said this year’s festival is receiving positive feedback from festival lovers who are excited to be reunited with the shrimp and grits event.
