Over the weekend I was able to view some of the winter olympic games. So far here is what I compiled from the NBC updates.
Team USA currently has four medals at the PyeongChang Games – and our first gold medal came courtesy of 17-year-old Red Gerard [[jer-ARD]] in the men's snowboard slopestyle Saturday night. The second came yesterday when Chris Mazdzer [[MAZ-der]] finished second to win silver in men's luge singles.
Our next gold arrived last night – for those watching the delayed women’s slopestyle – from American snowboarder Jamie Anderson. Of course, this isn’t Anderson’s first time taking the top prize – it’s her second – as she also won in Sochi [[ O-chee]] in 2014.
Team USA is also taking home the bronze medal from the figure skating team event with siblings and Maia [[MY-ah]] and Alex Shibutani placing second in the ice dance free dance. But they got there with a little help from Mirai Nagasu (who finished second in the women's single free skate to earn the U.S. nine points) and Adam Rippon, who was third in the men's single free skate to grab eight points – sealing the deal for Team USA to finish third overall with a total of 62 points.
- For the record, when Nagasu nailed that triple axel during her program, she also nailed her place in the record books. She’s the first American woman to EVER (the third overall) to land a triple axel at the Olympics.
- Gerard can go for two golds when he competes in the Big Air contest on February 24th.
- Where Are We In The Medal Count? At the moment, Norway is atop the medal standings at the Winter Games with eight, Canada is second with six, the Netherlands have five and the Germany is tied with the United States at four medals.
