Jennifer Lawrence Joins Twitter With Powerful Statement

Jennifer Lawrence just joined Twitter for an amazing cause.

Earlier this week, the Oscar-winning actress quietly created her first-ever Twitter account to stand in solidarity with the Black community while delivering an important message on America’s criminal justice system. “Nearly 1 in 4 Black men in America will be locked up at some point in their life,” Lawrence wrote in her first tweet Tuesday (June 16) along with a short clip detailing how “corruption has broken our criminal justice system—& what we can do to fix it.”

In her second tweet, shared the following day, the Joy star joined the mass of people demanding justice for Breonna Taylor, the 26-year-old Black woman who was fatally shot in her own apartment by Louisville Metro Police Department officers on March 13 after executing a no-knock search warrant.

Lawrence, who was born in Louisville, Kentucky, shared a statement calling for those culpable for Taylor’s death to be held accountable.

“No arrests have been made, the officers responsible for her death remain employed by the LMPD, and disturbingly, the LMPD’s own investigation report was woefully inaccurate,” she wrote Wednesday (June 17). “As a Louisvillian, as a human being, I cannot be silent.”

“I join all those who are speaking out against this grave injustice, calling upon Attorney General Daniel Cameron to take immediate action to hold those responsible for her death accountable,” she continued. “We must not allow the erasure of Black women to continue in America. As many activists and leaders have been imploring for years: #SayHerName.”

Although she has been privately present on social media, this is the first time Lawrence has publicly asserted her social media presence. Even so, she isn’t alone in wanting justice for Taylor, Beyonce (here), Demi Lovato (here) and many other celebrities have been calling for those responsible for her death to be held to the fullest extent of the law.
