Glynn permanently closes Mackay River fishing piers on F.J. Torras Causeway

In the interest of public safety, the Georgia Department of Transportation, in coordination with Glynn County, has permanently closed the Mackay River fishing piers on the F.J. Torras Causeway.

The piers are remnants of the old Mackay River bridge that was mostly removed when the new 4-lane bridge was built in 1986. DOT Officials said public safety is their number one priority and the closure of these bridge structures was necessary.

DOT District Engineer Robert McCall said the life span of the structures was extended for recreational purposes and enjoyed by the public for many years. Signs have been put up advising people of the closure and the DOT strongly urges the public not to trespass for their own safety. While the closure of the fishing piers isnโ€™t ideal, County officials said other piers are still open for fishing on St. Simons such as those at Gascoigne Bluff and in the Village.ย
